SCIENTIFIC NAME: Julidochromis regani

COMMON NAME: Regani, convict julie,striped julie

ORIGIN: Africa

FAMILY: Cichlidae

SPECIES TYPE: Julidochromis (burundi)

MAXIMUM SIZE: 6 -12 Inches in wild more like 6-8 in aquariums

LIFE SPAN: 10 Years

HABITAT: (Endemic) to Lake Tanganyika on the Burundi coast with lots of caves and out croppings.

DIET:Accepts flake, spirulina ,brine shrimp, mysis, blood worms etc. both frozen and freeze dried.

TEMP: 72-77 Degrees

PH: 7.5-9 moderately alkaline,medium hard water 8-17dgh

TEMPERAMENT: Fairly peaceful fish. Can hold its own against bullies. Can also be aggressive when breeding.

TANK SIZE: Minimum 29 gallons

TANK REGION: Lower to middle

TANK MATES: Can be housed with similar size tangs (lelupi, marlieri, brichardi, cyprichromis) to name a few.

FILTRATION AND SETUP: HOB mechanical and canister filters work great.they like a fine gravel or sand substrate. likes lots of caves and hiding places.plants can be in tank but they may dig during breeding.

COLORATION: There are a few variations but Burundi have 4 horizontal stripes with a cream background and white and black outlines on all fins and some white speckles on tail fin.

BREEDING: They are cave breeders who can lay as many as 300 eggs on the roof of chosen cave or spot. The eggs hatch in 4-6 days and are free swimming in another 7-10 days. Both the parents care for the fry and both defend the territory with medium aggression.
