PostSubject: breeding egg laying tanganikian fish!   Sun Apr 05, 2009 6:29 pm

hello all these are just some of the things i do that i have had great success with. i have found that when i set out to breed a certain species of tangs i tend to get a group of atleast 10.i have bought pairs and fewer groups of 5 and 6 fish but i have had the best breeding from larger groups even if there are only 1 pair in the entire group.

the water and current is a major factor for me also. i always have alot of current in my tanks.the water of course has to be clean free of nitrates and nitrites and ammonia and such (duh you say).now to get back to the current. i keep it high and put lots of large cong shells in my tanks.the females tend to stay with there shells to stay away from the current and the males go about protecting there turf.when i have little current they are all out and i dont get as much breeding.

my water temp is also a factor i keep my tangs at 78 to 80 degrees.when the moon is at new stage it has the most pull on the earth and i lower the temps to 71-72 degrees and within a week i have tiny tiny frey in the cong shells. most all tang eggs will be white if they are fertilized if they darken they are no good and will make your shell stink and rancid. remove and clean if this happens or your water will go crazy from them.the shell size is from softball to football size except for shell dwellers they get goldsmouth turbo shells.

once you have free swimmers in the shells i usually take the shell out and put it in a 10 gallon tank and flush it with the water in that tank a few times . the free swimmers come out and you can put the shell back in your main tank.

then i feed the tiny tiny lads with simple finly crushed egg flake.then is when the patients start as it takes forever for them to grow out.in the long run its worth it because they are beautiful fish. i hope this little bit of info helps some of you out who are wanting to breed some tangs.oh and good luck. if you need some help just ask ill do what i can for ya. thanks for takeing the time to read my mumbojumbo .detroitfish
