PostSubject: Brine shrimp   Fri Apr 03, 2009 5:47 am

I am attempting to breed my own brine shrimp as food for my fish. I took one L of water and one teaspoon of eggs. I aerated it for one hour then used some aquarium salt. I aerated on and off for another 24 hours. One day later, I had about 10000 baby brine shrimp. I fed them a shrimp pellet, and let them be for the night. I got up this am and there are hardly any swimming shrimp left. I have directed a light toward the bottom, which I did this am. What am I doing wrong? Also, since the eggs can't be processed by my fish, how do I separate the live ones from the eggs. Thx

They will usually only live 24 hours. Try siphoning them out wit a piece of airline tubing or a turkey baster.

    Hi Ivy,

Here are a couple of links that should help.

Brine shrimp under the right conditions can live for a stupid long time. They just get big, for brine shrimp that is.

I've used the second page Mark linked before for brine shrimp, and it worked just fine. Also, for the super lazy I believe it's the San Francisco Bay brine shrimp people make a fairly decent sized brine shrimp grower/starter kit that I found really cheap at either a big pet store or a big box store.

So easy my 7 year old could manage it, grow them and dump them in for his fish.
