I will start by saying I love Convicts but have fell in love with the colors of HRP's. I had a pair of Convicts a while back but the male died from something foreign entering their tank along with some other fish. The female Convict was the only fish that survived.

The HRP's I got over 6mo ago now havent paired or spawned. This is probably because they share a over crowded tank ATM. I have eight of these guys and I think five or six are females. I have been monitoring them for a couple of months now. I found the alpha male of the group and removed him. ( was staking out a strong male for my mature female Con)

So I put him in the 125g along with a Jaguar Cichlid, 2x Jack Dempsey, Severum and a Green Terror. I didn't think it was going to work out but the larger Cichlids dont seem to consider the smaller guys (convict and HRP) as a threat. They fought for the first few days or so.

Well it has been about five weeks now and they have taken over a piece of driftwood on one end of the tank. The female has been digging for the entire last week constantly. They both protect the area with much confidence. I love the gill flaring they are doing to keep the larger guys out of their territory.

So I have been waiting and wondering if they were gonna take care of business or not. Yesterday I was looking in there and trying to check out the female. I have been conditioning with live food and what not. Well I was feeding som fresh shrimp and seen her come up. Her vent tube is all the way extended for the first time.

It shouldn't take any time now I think she will be laying eggs today or tomorrow. I am hoping for a sucessful spawn. I cant wait to see the fry. I will probably use most of the fry for feeders and keep the best looking (Blue Convicts) I am hoping to get a beautiful large male!

A quick update...The female laid eggs. They both abandon the corner they viciously guarded for a week. I seen them chasing each other around in a breeding behavior today before water changes. So I am hoping they will do it again soon. The male HRP has developed a pretty large hump on the head in the last week looks like a hard ass now.

That sounds fairly cool. Depending on where you're at or what I'd be up for a few of the fry. Smile

Another update....The CON and HRP had to be seperated. Sense, the male HRP I moved back to the original tank has hooked up with one of the best looking females in the tank. I think at the next water change I might give them their own 29g for breeding purposes and fry for fish food.

Nope, fish are in totally different tanks now. The Convict is the one in my tank of death. The HRP's are split between the 75g and the 125g with larger tank mates. The males are in the 125g with Oscar, (M and F) Jack Dempsey, Severum, and a Firemouth. The females are in the 75g with the Female Jag.

I know that this thread is fairly old but I wanted to know more about HRP's. I see them for sale a lot. What is the minimum tank requirement for these guys. I think that the females are beautiful. Would love to have a couple. I do have a 20 tall that is empty. Is it possible that they would be okay with a male betta?
I did look them up a while back and read that they would eat snails so I figured I better not get them. The more I see them the more I want some!!

Well they are pretty nasty buggers....I got rid of the ones I had. They are a lot like convict Cichlids but more colorful. Here is a profile MikeD wrote on them along with pics I provided of the ones I had.....A 20g would be minimum for one but the betta would not be a good tankmate...you could possibly do a pair on a 20g long...a 29-30g would be bette though for a pair.

Well maybe someday. I sure wish they got along with angels!
When we build our log cabin it will have a basement and you know it's gonna be full of tanks!!
