My Japanese is stupid rusty, but from what I can make out it's a new type of deep fryer that been in development for 10 years and doesn't cause oil to explode on contact with water (sugei!) The goldfish just steer clear of the oil. The goldies can apparently live 5 to 10 year on croquet bits that drop through.

Now that's weird. I wonder how the gas exchange works on that tank with a layer of oil on top like that?

Not sure. I imagine there's more to it then we're seeing in a generic news show. I'm guessing the water must be exposed to the air somewhere in the system, even if it's a small area to be able to pull out a dead fish or something.
