| Hey all, I need help with my new addition. To day i picked up a seccond chinchilla! Her name is rose and she is still a kit (baby). Well I have a little problem! Chinchillas are not suppose to leave there moms untill they are 6 weeks. I think mine is younger than that. Rose flips out when we leave her alone and starts crying. Rose wont stop untill we pick her up. Chins do not like to be held and will start climbing you when you pick them up. Rose is the opposite she likes being held and is sleeping in my hand as i type this. What can we do to help her adjust to being away from her mom? |

| I got it from a LPS here and they got it from the breeder. I asked an employee if I could hold her and what sex it was. She didnt know what the sex was and asked me if I could sex her so I dont think they will have a clue on what to do. I joined a chinchilla forum but its taking the admin forever to aprove me. |

| I just emailed my furry rescue friend for you. I sure hope for your sake it's not like rabbits where they need to stay with the mother until it's weened. |

| Talked to my friend some, her biggest concern is that Rose is eating well. She would leave the kits with the mother at bare minimum till the kit is weened, which is usually between 8 to 12 weeks. Depending on how young she is was also saying it may not be a bad idea to try and give her powdered goats milk as a supplement.
The pet store milks aren't that great for chins, due to them usually being formulated for kittens/puppies and are more carnivore based.
Rose may grow out of the constantly needing to be held all the time thing, or depending on what the breeder did, she may just have gotten used to and now want to be held all the time. |

| Thank you Saint! Rose is eating normal chinchilla food and is drinking her water. Our concern was her not wanting to be left alone and held all of the time. She is doing better where we can put her in her cage and sleep but she still cries and wants to be held. She likes to sleep in our sweatshirt pockets and will do so for hours. |

| Talked to my friend a few hours ago, so I'm hoping I'm not forgetting anything. She said it sounds like she's healthy just fairly young, and the hiding is more what she'd expect at that age, but the being held, is more likely been trained, either intentionally or not just from regular holding. So long as her stools are looking normal as well as the regular eating, you should be oke. If she is that little, picking up a cheapie digital scale (that does grams) may not be a bad idea either, just so you can make sure she's putting on weight. Make sure the scale can zero out too so you can use a basket or something to keep her on the scale. |
