PostSubject: Anyone keep any saltwater?   Thu Dec 11, 2008 10:50 pm

One of my local fish stores is getting out of oddball saltwater and since I've always stared at them when I stopped by they asked if I'd be interested in taking one or two of their sea hares.

It's been years and years since I've done any salt water, and that at the time was a 500g tank, so I'm not sure if the same rules apply to a 30. Anyone know any good basic setup tips, or info?

If tank setup/maintenance is easy enough I'm very tempted.

Heres a link to the SW Cycling process.

Heres a link for FOWLR tank.

Heres a link for a Reef Tank.

Its a ton of info but from my understanding SW tanks arnt that hard to keep.

Oh yea and for people who dont know what FOWLR means its Fish Only With Live Rock.

Sweet thanks! Doesn't look like the small ones are much worse that tending to a big one.

From what I've been reading up on the sea hares, looks like I'd need to do something in between reef and fowlr. These guys aren't a fan of heavy currents, but like to nom on sponges and stuff.

Looks like some more research to do, but may be fun. Smile

I know it is a freshwater forum but if I get enough requests down the road I may add a small general area for salty stuff.

scratch That would be interesting.

I'm just now starting to learn about salt water. I know I want a large SW tank later on down the road.

The Christmas Tree Worm is pretty cool looking. Seems like you'd need a decent reef setup to keep it happy tho. The problem with that is if I take any of the sea slugs they like to munch on stuff like that. Smile

My plan right now, is to move some of the aquatic hatchlings out of the 30 they're in and set things up with some live rock. Even tho they get around a foot, from what I've been reading so long as they have stuff to climb on one or two can live in a 30 just fine.

I just need to find somewhere to get bulk nori sheets, since it's their favorite food.

The worms are something to keep in mind if you get bit by the SW bug:)

Grade C 1000 sheets, 44 bucks. Not bad. Not bad at all. Good find on that.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but that reef tank I used to deal with was a gigantic pain in the nuts. We'll see tho. I need to get all my christmas stuff done before I can really spend any time monkeying with it.

Odds are I'll just be doing the slugs, most of the SW stuff is expensive, and I've never once had a call about it so it's not like I can even claim it's just in case. Wink

Have you thought about putting anything else with the slugs?

Maybe.

I've only briefly talked about it some with the guy who tends all the salt water stuff at that shop. Right now he has the slugs separate since the marine fish that sell well for them are fairly aggressive and were picking on the slugs. After christmas I'm planning on talking with guy some and doing some more research on what the slugs need first, and then if there are any smaller fish that would be compatible both with the slugs and the set up for them (and they're not a bajillion dollars) I may consider it.

Most of the fish I've seen for sale with them have never caught my eye. The kids would prolly love cowfish or puffers, but no idea on compatibility.

Shame all the saltwater turtles get either gigantic or are endangered. Wink
