| Hi all
I baught a 250 litre tank this week. With the tank came one fantale gold fish and two placostumeses. I want to stoke the tank with African cichlits, I know the gold fish is not a warm water fish. I feel sorry for the gold fish. It is about 4 inches in size ther must be sumthing wrong with it's eyes it seems as if there is a dul membrain covering it eyes. It seems happy in the tank. Will it fit with the cichlits? My other tank is a 100 litre tank. It is to big fore that tank. what to do?
Regards Iaan

| Hello Iaan, welcome to Freshwater Madness!
Your goldfish will not be okay with African cichlids. The cichlids are way too aggressive. Even if they don't kill the goldfish outright, they'll shred the goldfish's fins and harass it to death in short order. The goldfish will need another tank or you will need to find another home for it.
All I can really do is guess at what is going on with the goldfish's eyes. Does the goldfish seem to be able to see alright? If there aren't any signs of disease and it appears to be in otherwise good health, I'm guessing it's a side effect from a previous illness, possibly scar tissue left after a fungal or bacterial infection. I've had fish who end up with a cloudy eye after recovering from a disease. Do you have any idea how old the goldfish is? I have a silver-tip tetra now that is almost four years old and one of it's eyes is cloudy, a side-effect of old age. Goldfish can live a lot longer than four years if cared for properly though, so I doubt that is the issue. If the goldfish is eating well and doesn't show any other signs of disease, I would keep an eye on it for other health issues and treat appropriately if any arise, but wouldn't worry too much about the eyes in the meantime.
Depending on what kind, the plecos will probably be alright with Africans. When first adding the cichlids, watch them and be ready to remove the plecos if they take too much of a beating.
Glad to have ya here, keep us posted on how things turn out and how the cichlid tank comes along.

| Nice looking tank! That fish may out grow the 250L (66G) tank and will likely be too big for the 100L tank too unfortunately. It sounds like a bacterial infection. If the gold fish is doing ok, eating, swimming and not acting too weird just do some small water changes to keep the water nice and clean, a lot of times the eye may clear up on its own. If he starts to get worse you may want to treat it with a anti bacterial medicine, I would suggest starting with clean water and maybe some melafix. As far as the Cichlids the 250L is big enogh but if you want Cichlids you will want to get rid of the goldfish. _________________ "There he goes - one of God's own prototypes - a high powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. | Great looking tank, perfect for African cichlids!
Sorry, Iaan, the picture is too indistinct to really see what is going on with the goldfish's eyes, though he looks like a nice looking fish. But after the first post, I got to thinkin' and fish can get eye diseases similar to humans and other critters. The description fits cataracts perfectly, as well. Cataracts in fish are usually caused by stress and/or imbalanced diet. They aren't real common, and are usually induced by a fungal infection. So if the fish gets worse and Mostlycichlid's suggestion of treating for a bacterial infection doesn't work, ya may want to try treating for a fungal infection. Regardless, frequent water changes will be beneficial, and ya may try gettin' a flake food specially formulated for goldfish, if you don't have one already.

| The first thing to do is separate the goldie from the cichlids. That eye may just be an injury caused by the cichlids. I find that my cichlids like to go for the eyes when the fight with another fish. If it doesn't clear up then you could try treating it. |
