Snails appearing out of nowhere

So I have never had this happen before. I have a 5g with 5-6 guppies and I was looking in last night at feeding time and noticed about 10-15 snails in the tank. I have never kept snails in this tank or even in several years. I have also not changed anything in the tank in at least six months. I added two moss balls about six months ago. All the snails are similar size but some are bigger, the way I would explain them is they are longer and cone shaped snails. Anyway, what they heck is going on here, where did they come from and what are they? Oh they seem to be taking out the algae in the tank very fast. One last thought, I did add a couple ottos to the tank about two months ago, they didnt last long in fact they disappeared into thin air, have had no spikes or anything etc...etc...

Too small to identify positively as MTS, Paul? My guess would be MTS that came in on the moss balls as newborns. Newborn MTS are almost invisible unless yer specifically looking for them, and if they've been hiding out in the gravel since then, you may never have noticed them.

Yup...they look like malaysian trumpet snails. They tend to hide out in the gravel like Wyite said so you may not have noticed them before. Damn moss balls...lol.

Yeah, oh well though when they get big enough I can use them as quick snacks for the larger Cichlids.

LOL, I bought some assassin snails. I'll tell ya, I'm still struggling with the idea of any snail bein' more than just puffer food... Smile

My cichlids won't eat MTS. I think they might be too hard, or maybe just not very tasty. Smile

There are handfuls of them in with the lone RD, as well as with the non-mutant parrot fish. I've watched the RD pick them of the glass and then spit them back out.

Interesting, I don't think I have ever tried feeding them to be honest.

The RD will eat the pond snails, and I'd imagine the mystery snails, but even the sideneck turtles seem to have trouble with MTS.

This thread is reminding me to try and hunt down some brackish water snails to see how they do with the monos.
