We got three of these fish in a shipment of feeder goldfish. I don't recognize it. Does anyone know? They are about 2-3 inches long.

They look to be young sunfish, Lepomis sp.. Kinda young to tell which species for sure from the pics. Regardless of the species, most sunfish grow up to be pretty. The killer is until ya know which species, ya don't know if they'll get 4" or 14". More than likely they are one of the more common species, like the green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus, or the pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus.

Looking up pics, it does look like a sunfish. You're awesome. I can't tell which kind though. I guess it will mostly depend on the coloring it gets? They still looked pretty pale when I left there last night. I'll pay more attention today. It definitely has that sort of heart-shaped tail, so there are some species that immediately can be ruled out.

It looked like a sun fish to me, but there are lot of fish that look that way to me.
