Nice pics! Some of those fish look hugely deformed but then again I'm not that familiar with fancy goldfish.

LOL, that's always been my thought on some breeds of 'em, as well. My understanding is that they've been bred for ages so that they can be viewed from above in a pond, rather than from the side in a fish tank. Thus the strange, "deformed" shapes were favored because they were easier to see and provided greater interest when looking from above.

I like the trio of gold ones. They actually look like a Fenton carnival glass pitcher and goblet set my wife has. Smile

I had read the same thing somewhere about viewing them from above as well.

I really like that gigantically round black and white one.

Top viewed goldfish are the Japanese style of breeding

Top Viewed Ranchu(TVR)

Peralscales

The Chinese style is side viewed

Side Viewed Ranchu

Ryukins

All Japanese fish are judged in what are true bowl shows
While Chinese fish are judged in the aquarium
but Wyomingite is correct in the these fish were bred for ponds in both countries but the Japanese fish were influenced by Japans Koi Fish traditions

Japanese bowl showing

This is the format that has been adopted in the USA which is more traditional Chinese. Their thinking is the goldfish should be appealing from any point of view. It is permitted in Chinese showing to handle the fish to get a better look

Are the 4th (black & white) & 5th (orange & black) pics from the top Ranchu?

Yes the 4th and 5th goldfish are both Ranchu. The 4th is a Top Viewed Ranchu(TVR)
The 5th is a Side Viewed Ranchu (SVR) A good TVR doesn't always make a good SVR fish
In TVR they look for the wide back, square head and strong swimming, not so much how the animal carries this fins. They are often compare to a sumo in Japan. Compact and powerful
