I am the type of person not to use meds in my tanks unless absolutley necessary. Anyway, I had a female Mbuna Cichlid (Kenyi) that got beat up pretty bad while the male was trying to breed with her when she wasn't willing. The female had no tail fin left and the anal fin was also damaged pretty bad and several scratches. I noticed and put her in a 20g tank for treatment.

I have had her in there about four weeks now. I have been feeding her a varied diet with lots of veggie matter and some live and some homemade foods. I have also been doing twice weekly water changes. I decided to use melafix as well for the first week then after every water change. I am convinsed the water alone heals the wounds fast. I am also convinsed the melafix has aided to speed up the healing.

She is doing good now and I am getting ready to move her back to the main tank. Her tail is full grown back and no sign of anything ever happening besides you can tell all the new growth from the damaged tissue. The point is melafix is fairly harmless to most fish and is a great product in my experience for aiding in fin and tissue re-growth.

Here is a video of the two Male that beat up the female...

Sounds like yours worked out as good as that Oscar I tested it on.

Since I don't have anything else currently, I'm testing Melafix out again on a handful of mystery SA cichlids that I took in this week that have moderate to advanced, Ich or that velvet disease. I'm not sure which one. I usually only ever get asked about fish ailments after the fish die. These must be some hardy cichlids or they look worse than they really are.

I don't like to use meds or chemicals in my tanks also, but like you I have used Melafix. It is great at speeding up healing and help prevent infection. I have also used Pimafix for fungal infections. Both of these meds are the only ones I will use and that is only if it seems necessary.
