| So I've had the two Amphilophus together since they had the babies. Everything was going good. They were getting along. Everything was fine. Note the was.
Around 5ish. I fed them, and everyone was doing good. I came down just a bit ago around 9ish, and the female was beating the ever loving crap out of the male. Had him chased into the corner, tore up the rear fin something pretty good. The top part is almost down to the body good.
I'm not sure if there comes a point where the male is just done with the fry but the female isn't or what exactly caused the whoopin, but I had to do an emergency evac, and he's alone in a too small tank, but I'm pretty sure he'd prefer too small tank for a few days to death. |

| Yea. I figured it was par for the course. Just glad I caught it before she killed him. |

| LMAO. Sorry, I couldn't resist a chuckle. If ya breed cichlids, that's whatcha gotta expect.
To make things a bit easier in the future though, ya might get a section of egg crate and use it as a divider to split the tank between the two of them. It 'll keep him from gettin' beat and save the stress of movin' him as well. It could make reintroductions a little easier when they're ready to get frisky again, since he never really left the tank.

| Well this is still my first time intentionally breeding them. I'm not counting the cons, since if there's water they'll breed. I wanted to do the eggcrate thing, but at 9pm on a monday night the only thing open around here is a Walmart, a food store and the gas station and I'm pretty sure they don't carry eggcrate unless I steal it out of one if their light fixtures. For as much of a beating as he took in a few hours, I didn't want to leave it overnight till I could go grab some. Also, I didn't know if he was eating the fry, which is why he got pounded, but those are for Snappy. |

| Well, glad you got it moved before a fatality. I can see at 9 pm not getting egg crate up...It almost sounds like maybe the male did eat them...although it could just be post spawning aggression....The Acaras I had did that for a few days each time. _________________ "There he goes - one of God's own prototypes - a high powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Oh no, ya had to get him outta there, by all means! Just plantin' the seed for the future: large cichlids breeding pretty much makes egg crate standard equipment, really.

| On the plus side, they heal up really fast too. Monday night, his tail fin was lookin like it met a cheese grater. As of today it's filling back in nicely.
As far as the egg crate goes, how do you guys set up something like that?
I was thinking cut the eggcrate to size, use rocks or bricks to keep the bottom in place and then I wasn't sure the best plan of attack. I was considering drilling holes in the plastic top of the tank to put cable ties through and into the eggcrate, but figured there was a more elegant solution for it out there. |
