Looks like this week my current batch of silvers is heading out. I feel a little weird about it, but dude that owns one of the decent local fish stores brought over a red ear slider that had been chewed on by a dog. While we were talking, he saw the pond of them and basically made me an amazing offer on 'em for him to sell and help me with the rescue stuffs.

So my plan was to take the proceeds from one of 'em to restart the breeding project. But, and it's my own fault for looking, besides silvers, this week there is available both Heterotis niloticus, the hardly seen African Arowana *and* Hoplarchus psittacus.

Gah!

My LFS is selling African Aros....sounds like a good deal.

Really? It's the first I've seen 'em available around here. I had read a good bit about 'em before. I thought they were interesting in just how different they were to the other Asians and South Americans.

Africans are boring odd looking fish with very strange needs. Not the first choice when it comes to Aro's. If you are into odd ballz that is the first choice for sure

Heh. I know they're filter feeders, but I thought the african ones were cute.

Since I've got a pretty good handle on the silvers I'll more than likely stick with them, especially if I can grow more out and do like I did with this batch.

It's just tempting since it's the first I've seen either of the other ones available and I thought they were interesting too.

If only I had that much room. As it stands, I'm looking to dedicating nearly an entire room to a pond to eventually breed them out in. I don't know if I'd have enough space to keep both and keep them from killing each other.

Of the arowana types I like the Jardini the least since they look crabby.

I meant from my first post it's the first time I've seen either the african aros or the really real parrot fish (Hoplarchus psittacus) on the lists at the fish farm my friend works at.

I had to search to see whatthe parrot fish look lie they are awesome looking fish. I dont know much about the different types of cichlids and those were new to me

I dont think breeding silvers or any other Aro has been done by a hobbyist. If you do get them to spawn that would be awesome.

I'm mostly up on the more common SA Cichlids since that's what I usually get here. It wasn't till I met some of the folks at a big aquarium in Vegas that I ever saw the "real" parrot fish.

There's a few videos on Youtube of folks breeding Aros, it's not common for sure, but it's been done at least.
