PostSubject: My plan for black convicts, let me know what ya think.   Wed Mar 10, 2010 3:14 pm

By no means am I an expert but I have been keeping fish for about a year now. Right now I have a 55gal tank with an oscar and a three inch pleco in it. I'm thinking about getting a male and female black convict and breeding them. Now I have a 20gal long tank to spare, but I'm wondering if I can breed the convicts in the 55gal with the oscar or will they be too aggressive? I know its very hard to get rid of all the hundreds of fry every month so I'm thinking I can feed them to the oscar to cut down on the amount of fish I will have. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think the Cons would have a hard time breeding with a larger Cichlid present. Also plecos and egg layers are do not mix well. The other problem you are going to run into at some point is the Oscar is going to need a bigger tank. If you want to breed the Convicts I would suggest doing so in the 20g long tank.

Ok thanks that sounds good. Are their any ways to get rid of the fry convicts other than feed them to the oscar? I ask because in my city there is only one fish store that sells convicts. And if they breed too much which would you suggest I seperate and put with the oscar if I can, male or female convict?

The male would likely be best to move if needed. You can breed them for food, I am sure your Oscar will be happy, sell them on forums, sell them on aquabid are choices for getting rid of the fry.

Fry go a lot quicker than you think they would if your using them for food.
