PSEUDOTROPHEUS FLAVUS

Scientific Name(s):
Pseudotropheus Flavus

Common Name(s):
Dinghani

Origin:
Chinyankwazi Island, Malawi

Family: Cichlidae

Species Type:
Mbuna (rock dweller)

Maximum Size: 4-5 inches

Life Span:
Average 4-10 yrs but can live longer

Natural Habitat: Rocky habitat, reef lake

Diet: Herbivore. Will take both pellets and flakes and occasionally some frozen foods. I feed more veggies to avoid bloat

Temperature:
78F-82F

PH: 7.8-8.6

Minimum Tank Size:
75 gallon or larger is better but may be able to keep a nice group in a 55 gallon as long as it 4 ft long.

Tank Region:
Flavus usually stay on the bottom of them tank, males would take over caves on the bottom and dig.

Temperament: Aggressive

Possible Tank Mates: other aggressive African Cichlids

Filtration and Setup: It is best to have lots of filtration for African Cichlids especially if you have a lot of fish. Keep lots of rocks in the tank to create caves and territories for males to even out the aggression.

Coloration: Males are yellow/black females are brownish/greyish

Breeding: The males will begin to court the females when he wants to breed and will take over a spot in the tank and begin to dig. Shortly after the pair will breed and since these fish are maternal mouth brooders, the females will hold the eggs in her mouth(bucal cavity). The females will continue to hold the eggs in their mouth until the eggs become wigglers which can take about 18-21 days.
