I might know what has been killing my angels but I need everyone's imput.

My light fixtures in my canopy has rust on them. I had noticed before but I have never seen signs of it dripping into my tank. This moring however I notice a few spots on the glass braces that go across my tank.
Could this be causing my angels to die? I'm gonna do a 75% water change and leave the lid up until I get some answers.

Well, I think I have the answer to my own question.lol After searching the web, everything points to that some rust in a tank isn't bad as long as the water changes are done weekly. Which I do.
Also, the plants I have in my tank should be happy with the extra iron.
So there ya go!

If anyone else knows anything please feel free to add on. I do believe as a planted tank enthusiast this should be a need to know answer.
I even read that people put nails in there filters to put iron in there planted tanks. Who'd a thunk it????

You beat me to it but yes, rust in the small amounts that drop from the light fixture or in my case metal screen lids are pretty harmless. I would have had a few tankfulls of dead fish by now if it weren't. Wink

I have a huge box of plant tabs for the pond plants, I just looked and one of the ingredients in it is iron.

I did a lot of reading today about things people put in there tank for nutrients. I was shocked!!! One of the ones that really stuck to me was the use of steel wool pads to put iron in the tank. Stump remover was another one. I had never heard of this before today but I plan on doing some more research.
I don't regularly dose ferts. My plants look fine but I just wonder with some of these "homemade" ferts what would happen.

Well, with the homemade ferts you really don't know what you are getting into. Every tanks chemistry is slightly different. I would feel safer using something with guaranteed analysis. IMO when you start stuffing things into your tank that you have no guaranteed analysis you are putting gasoline on the fire. That is my 2 cents on the situation, just be careful if you do anything, test results on a QT tank with no fish and have test kits on hand.

No worries. I'm not one to go spend extra money on things I don't really need. I have two bottles of excel and a gallon of flourish that i've had for over a year. Like I said my plants are doing great. With everything that has gone on with my angels I won't be doing anything to my tank soon other than stripping it down.

If you make it a point to check around, you can get aquatic fertilizer for cheaper than the box of steel wool scrubbies.

People do some crazy things.
