My african cichlids have been glancing and staying at the top of the tank the last few days. I added an airstone thinking maybe they needed more air, but it hasn't helped thus far. The tank is 80 gallons running an ac30 (hob), afluval 405, and a sponge filter. The temp is 80 degrees and doesn't change much. The water parameters are as follows

PH- 7.5

KH- 120ppm

GH- 220ppm

Ammonia- 0ppm

Nitrite- 0ppm

Nitrate- 0ppm

I know the KH is low but I don't know how to safely raise it. If you have ...

Anyway. I've had three runs of them now, and someone somewhere has decided I'm not allowed to keep them.

First batch, I was trying to bring the ph back down since the source I got them from had them in a lower ph but my salty mix cranked the ph up to a little over 8. I figured it was my fault since it was the first time I've ever messed with chemicals to monkey ...

I got an old book on brackish aquariums from the 70s. Originally I was going to pick up a fairly new book on brackish stuff called Brackish-Water Fishes, but I got to check it out in my local BN and, it was really weird. Not in a good way weird either. I flipped it open and there was a big photo spread of discus, with a little note at the bottom, not for brackish water. Really? Why's it in a brackish book then?

Anyway I found a book that I do actually like. It's out of print, but pretty easily ...

I have a Malaysian Leaf Frog, and lately he has been calling quite a bit, and I was finally able to record it. This clip is like 20 seconds long, and there's 3 croaks in it. This was taken a room away too. I didn't want to scare him. It's so loud. The best way to describe it is like a smoke detector beeping when the battery is dying. It feels right in your ear.

I'm hoping this is just a phase with the smaller ones, but Orfe are kinda dicks. As in, I've seen more mellow cichlids.

So, I had a few bigger ones in the outside pond (4, from 6 inches out to a foot), to take care of mosquitoes. They were pretty well behaved, mostly hung out at the top. I had to keep a net on the pond to keep them from jumping out, but that's sort of a theme with the top feeding bug snatching out of the water type fish.

So anyway we had a pretty major power outage a ...

Anyway I think I have proved to myself that two Penguin 350s will out perform and harbor more bacteria hands down to two AC 110's. When I moved the two tanks to my moms the 120 had two Penguin 350's, the tank has an oscar, Red Devil, 4x Silver Dollars, 3x Synodontis cats, A sailfin Pleco and two JD's.
FUN! and MORE FUN!

How I started my day, at 5:40 this morning. To give ya an idea, that tower on the right side of the pic in the first link is roughly 85' tall. I was app. 50' to the west of that, directing hose streams. The first link is later on in the event, the pics in the second link are a lot closer to how it looked when I first started dealin' with it. I was only directin' things alone for the first 5 minutes plus or minus, but 5 minutes seems like eternity when yer lookin' up at 80'-100' ...

I went to my first meeting last week (I saw a listing for the society in TFH mag.) and met a lot of awesome fish keeps. It was really cool to be able to hang out with, and talk with, a huge group of hobbyist face to face.

I could go on and on about the MASI but I won't bore you all with that. I am going encourage you all to check out the web site though, .(MASI) and invite you all by if you find yourself in the area. ...

I have finally got the two large tanks moved to my moms house (the 120 and 125g) The 75g I moved to my girlfriends house and had to move the smaller community in with the Cichlids in the 75g. They seem to be doing great as of two or three days.

Turns out to be one of the fish and boat people I know, who's been over bringing turtles before and who's seen my pond of pacu. He couldn't remember ...

well on wed 3-24 my festaes hatched into a nice brood. im excited as this is their third attempt. they ate the first batch and i killed the second. hopefully this time we get it right. this morning i went to my 75g and saw my loselli eggs were hatching as i was looking at them. that was truly a enjoyable first. my oldest son and i were all up on the glass watching these wigglers come outthe eggs. pretty cool. ill snap pics this weekend to post.
